Beijing: Friday 8-20-2010

Today we went to the breakfast bar at the hotel. It was very nice. They had Chinese and Western style items on the bar. We had the American standard…eggs, bacon, French toast, hash browns, apple juice and coffee. After breakfast we went back to our room to relax a little before Cherry, our guide came to pick us up to take us around Beijing.

Cherry got here this morning at 8:30. We went to the pearl factory first. I got to pick out an oyster for the young lady to open and show was the pearls inside. She gave me 3 small pearls as a gift. Then they took us inside to a pearl shop to buy some pearls. I got Ali a necklace and a bracelet.

After we left the pearl factory we got to the Great Wall. Cherry took our picture on the Great Wall. We all went to the first watch tower, but Cherry and I stayed behind while Russell went to the 2nd tower. While he was up there he bought a coin and a brass certificate that said he had climbed the great wall along with his name and date on it. He said his coin is going to be his new ball marker when playing golf.

After we left the Great Wall Cherry took us to the Cloisonné factory where they make plates, vases, jewelry, and such out of brass and sand. It was a very long process to make each piece. We bought Ali a small plate and a bracelet. I got a small trinket bowl with a lid. After we bought our ware, we went up stairs and had a traditional Chinese lunch. It was white rice, steamed peas and carrots, steamed celery, fried chicken strips, beef with red & green peppers and onions, pork, ginger tea, & water melon. It was all yummy! (except for the celery...yuck… ha ha)

We went to the Summer Palace after lunch. Oh how pretty! I could have stayed there a little longer. We walked from the East gate to the North gate. We took lots of pictures.

On our way back to the hotel from the Summer Palace, we pasted by Olympic Park. I took a few pictures from the street, but tomorrow we will be going there. So, I will take some pictures to share with you.
